The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology was established at the same time as the Faculty of Medicine, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, in 1947 under the name of the “Obstetrics and Gynecology Division”. This Division was responsible for the obstetrics and gynecology instruction for undergraduate medical students in the fifth and sixth years of the medical program.
With the addition of new faculty members in 1962, the Department divided its responsibilities into five areas according to its medical services: Antenatal care, In-patient care, Family planning, Delivery room services, Emergency room services, and Surgery. Medical students were also divided into five groups and took turns receiving instruction and training in each field five days a week. This practice made it more convenient and more efficient for small-group instruction and practical training.
Apart from producing medical doctors at the undergrade level, the Department collaborated with the Obstetrics and Gynecology Association of Thailand (which was later elevated to the Royal Thai College of Obstetrics and Gynecology) and the Medical Council of Thailand to offer a residency training program to produce specialist in obstetrics and gynecology since 1971 It has also offered fellowship training programs in various specialties since 1997 to produce specialists physicians in obstetrics and gynecology to keep up with the medical progress and increased healthcare demands in a more complex society.
