Department of Anesthesiology

A model medical institution that drives strong ethics and exemplifies the national standard.

In the past, Anesthesiology was a scope of surgery. Its application used to be handled by junior surgeons, while senior surgeons were responsible for performing the surgery. Thus, Anesthesiology had been part of the study of surgery until recently, when Prof. M.L. Kaset Sanitwong, MD., Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, initiated the separation of Anesthesiology from Surgery. This was in accordance with international practice, where “top hospitals or medical institutions in a developed nation must have their own independent Department of Anesthesiology”.

Anesthesiology has been in close relation to the success of  surgery from past to present. A leading institution in complex surgery operations, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital has been the first to complete several difficult operations in the country, including caesarean delivery, lung surgery, heart surgery, heart-lung machine application, etc. The hospital was also the first to have successfully performed several transplants, including a kidney transplant in 1972 and heart and liver transplants in 1987. In the same year, the hospital also completed the country’s first separation surgery of Siamese twins and delivery of GIFT pregnancy.

Achievements

The Department of Anesthesiology under the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, was the pioneering department of the studies. Several members of the department staff had been part of the foundation of the Anesthesiological professional standards, as well as the definition of the medical ethics for the Medical Council of Thailand and the Anesthesiological medical fees.  Among the staff, some members had been assigned to establish, administer and head the Royal College of Anesthesiologists of Thailand:

  1. Assoc. Prof. Plernsri Jaruworn, MD.
  2. Assoc. Prof. Pokjitt Wiyaporn, MD.
  3. Distinguished Scholar Wanna Somboonviboon, MD.
  4. Prof. Somrat Charuluxananan, MD.
  5. Prof. Thewarug Werawatganon, MD.

Besides the Royal College, other members of the department staff have also been assigned to different medical organizations. Prof. Supranee Niruttisart, MD., has been elected president of the Thai Association for the Study of Pain (TASP). For the second assignment, Asst. Prof. Sahadol Poonyathawon, MD., the deputy president of the Thai Society of Critical Care Medicine and Prof. Pannika Vorapaluk, MD., the deputy president of the Thai Society of Regional Anesthesia (Thai SRA).

A former member of the department of Anesthesiology under the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, also occupied an international role in the Asian Oceanic Society of Regional Anesthesia & Pain Medicine (AOSRA&PM) as chairman between 2014-2016.

In addition, the Department of Anesthesiology under the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University also produced internationally-recognized research, providing references quoted the most in the country. Over 10 years, the Department has led and produced research on quality and safety, as well as collaborated with other institutions, including a Thai Study for research on local 20 hospitals, and Perioperative and Anesthetic Advance Events in Thailand (PAAd Thai), for research on 22 hospitals, with a data source of over 333,000 patients, with the goal of improving the overall safety of Anesthesiological practice in Thailand.
