Dental Center

General dental services and specialized dentistry according to professional safe, clean and sterile standards.

The Dental department of King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, Thai Red Cross Society, had instituted since 1919 by Dr. H. Rek Day and Phra Arthitthayakhom as the first co-founder. They were the only two dentists who provided dental services during that time. Later, in 1947, the dental department was combined intothe surgery department of the hospital. Dr. Aree Simarak, a dentist, was appointed as the head of dental department. Later, The independent section of dental department was set up as Dental center of King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital and Dr. Sawang Terayanon, a dentist, was appointed as the head of dental center.

After the newly out-patient building was established named “Chulabhorn building”, Dental center was moved and started dental services for an increasing number of out-patients in Chulabhorn Building with support from Lieutenant Wiboon Suwikrom, a dentist, as the head of the center. Later in 1984, the collaboration with the relief officers along the Thai border of the country, the oral healthcare and treatment were provided and distributed in the form of mobile dental service to those patients in need.

“Bhor Por Ror Building”, newly main out-patient building was completely constructed and opened for medical service in 1989. Dental center was then  moved to Bhor Por Ror Building located on the 12th Floor and to become the dental center of King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital as the tertiary medical center.

From January 2018 until now, the dental center was renovated and relocated on the 17th Floor of Bhor Por Ror Building to obtain well-equipped facilities to perform standard oral healthcare and treatment in all specialties adopting all kinds of patients including out-patient and in-patient consulted within the hospital and referred from other dental institutions for benefits of the patients of King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital.

Award and Achievement

  1. Planning and providing dental care services to patients with complex systemic diseases and tertiary-level hospital patients through a multidisciplinary team approach. This team can comprehensively address oral health issues alongside the complex health problems of patients in a safe, effective, and appropriate manner.

  2. Establishing a dental clinic for the elderly to enhance the capacity for elderly care, starting from prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and alleviation of symptoms. This initiative aims to create a model of dental care that considers the lifestyle factors of patients, including comorbidities, degeneration of various organ systems, and cognitive decline leading to dependency on caregivers. It also takes into account economic and social conditions and develops assessment models for risk factors that rapidly deteriorate oral health. The goal is to promote health and prevent disease to delay the transition of self-reliant elderly individuals into a state of dependency for as long as possible.
  3. Collaboration with the Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, and the Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn Craniofacial Center at Chulalongkorn Hospital in a multidisciplinary approach to correct cranial and facial abnormalities through facial prosthetics and orthodontic treatment for patients with cleft lip and/or palate, as well as other craniofacial deformities.
  4. Cancer patients receiving radiation therapy to the head and neck are promptly and efficiently evaluated and treated for dental issues, especially surgical procedures, without delaying radiation therapy. Dental treatment plans are developed with consideration of the area and dose of radiation according to the type and stage of cancer at different sites, to prevent complications, particularly osteoradionecrosis. Additionally, custom-made oral appliances are created using digital technology to separate healthy tissues from irradiated areas, reducing adverse effects such as mucositis, xerostomia, or trismus. Finally, continuous dental care is provided to minimize post-radiation therapy complications, especially radiation-induced dental caries.
  5. Oral and maxillofacial surgery includes procedures such as the removal of cystic and tumor lesions in the jawbone, surgery to treat osteonecrosis due to medication or radiation therapy, orthognathic surgery combined with orthodontics, and other surgeries in the oral cavity and jaw under general anesthesia, in collaboration with plastic surgeons or ENT specialists.
