The Department of Pathology, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, started from “The Division of Pathology,” which was founded concurrently with the establishment of the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn Hospital, University of Medical Sciences, according to the royal decree dated May 22, 1947. It officially started the first semester on June 11, 1947. At first, The Division of Pathology was a division responsible for Pathology, Parasitology, Microbiology, Laboratory Medicine and Forensic Medicine classes, together with the Division of Physiology and Anatomy. These are the basic preclinical courses in the curriculum of The Faculty of Medicine. Prof. Chalerm Prommas, MD. was the first deputy chairman of the department. After that, Prof. Pirom Suvantemiya, MD. became head of the Department of Pathology until 1967.
Later, when The Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn Hospital, University of Medical Sciences was transferred to Chulalongkorn University, the division was renamed The Department of Pathology, Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University. It has also been the Department of Pathology for King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital until now.

2008: The world’s first diagnosis of “Plasmablastic Lymphoma” in the brain of HIV-positive patients by Prof. Shanop Shuangshoti, MD. and Assoc. Prof. Thamathorn Assanasen, MD.
2010: The world’s first discovery of “Angiomyeloproliferative Lesion” from stem cell therapy for SLE by Asst. Prof. Duangpen Thirabanjasak, MD.
2012: The world’s first discovery of the increased Myofibroblast cells along placental villi in Hemoglobin Bart’s fetus. This condition is the adaptive change of placenta towards birth asphyxia by Prof. Mana Taweevisit, MD.
2015: Report on AIDS patients with EBV-associated smooth muscle tumors which was the largest series that has ever been reported by Prof. Shanop Shuangshoti, MD., together with Prof. Chusana Suankratay, MD.
2015: The world’s first discovery of Chorioamnionitis from tuberculosis by Prof. Mana Taweevisit, MD.
2017: The world’s first discovery of BRAF V600E mutation in intracranial and cranial Juvenile Xanthogranuloma by Prof. Shanop Shuangshoti, MD.
2018: The world’s first discovery of cytological features of Low-grade Myofibroblastic Sarcoma cancerous tumor by Prof. Mana Taweevisit, MD.
2019: The world’s first research and presentation on Compact buds in Thyroglossal Duct Cyst from which the medical journal “Virchows Archiv” in which this research was published displayed the picture of Compact buds on its cover by Assoc. Prof. Somboon Keelawat, MD. and Dr.Andrey Bychkov.

The Department of Pathology at King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital aims to become a leading institution in the country and the region, producing professional pathologists and specialists in related fields, as well as graduates with advanced clinical diplomas, master’s, and doctoral degrees of high quality and integrity, aligned with the needs and circumstances of the nation. Additionally, the department provides diagnostic services for pathological examinations of patient specimens using modern knowledge and information technology that meets international standards. It also offers education and produces quality research published in reputable medical journals, both domestically and internationally.
