The blood bank is another division of the king Chulalongkorn hospital. It was established in 1953. It was called the blood room, located at SupaChandrabos, Gynecology Department. It is responsible for providing blood donations, identifying blood types and routine lab and blood components for patients. Later in 1958, the blood room was appointed as a blood unit and relocated to Napaporn Prapa Building. 

1967 Relocated to SupaChandrabos Building , gynecology Department. 

1970 Relocated to Rabiab Kunakasem Building.

1980 The blood unit was upgraded to the Blood Bank Division. 

1996 – 1997 The Blood Bank Division was upgraded to the Blood Bank Department.

2016 – present Located at Bhumisirimangalanusorn Building, 3rd Floor , Zone B. 

The Blood Bank department, King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital is now operating as a blood-related laboratory by Thai Red Cross supervision under Thai law. We are responsible for the blood donation service and the routine lab and medical laboratory tests. Furthermore, there is treatment using a blood cell separator. Our services are for in-patients and out-patients. We operate 24 hours non-stop for the benefit of patients and convenience of medical treatment. It includes advice about laboratory tests for doctors, customers and visitors.

Obligation

The Blood Bank Department participates in the producing of medical graduates, specialists in clinical pathology and transfusion medicine of the quality and proficiency that are on par with those of other leading educational institutes in Thailand and overseas. The Department also produces research works to support its instructional activities and medical services. Regulate and oversee the quality of its laboratory services to ensure compliance with the national and international services.

Support Activities

The Department of Transfusion Medicine provides services through five units:

  1. Blood and blood component preparation laboratory (Routine Lab).
  2. Special operation laboratory (Special Lab).
  3. Blood-letting therapeutic, apheresis and peripheral blood stem cell collecting laboratory.
  4. Molecular biology and advanced diagnostic testing laboratory (Advanced Diagnostic Lab).
  5. The Specimen accepting/blood components preparation and dispensing laboratory (Blood Service Lab).

Quality is key to the Blood Bank Department’s services. It has continued to be accredited by the medical laboratory standards ISO 15189 and ISO 15190 from the Bureau of Laboratory Quality Standards under the Department of Medical Sciences, the Ministry of Public Health from 2010 to the present day. It also receives a laboratory academic standards certification from the Royal College of Pathologists of Thailand. The Department has developed and utilized a Smart Container system to improve real-time temperature detection and transportation capability from 2018 to the present day. It also received the “Alert Telecar” Bronze award under the Lean in Healthcare Project for an invention under its Reduction of Blood Component Preparation Patients with Massive Blood Loss and Transportation Time to Emergency Rooms.

The Blood Bank Department was the first institute in Thailan to adopt the Electronic Crossmatch system for its blood preparation. This system reduces the blood preparation time and costs while providing faster services and maintaining its normal performance standards.

Steps for External Patient Referral

  1. Sample Collection for Testing
    – The collected sample must meet the specified volume requirements (as per the table).
    – The sample must be no older than 72 hours from the time of collection.
    – The sample must be stored at a temperature between 2-8°C.
  2. Testing Submission Procedure
    2.1 Completing the Test Request Form
    – Patients or service users must specify the requested test(s) on the Blood Bank Test Request Form.
    – The form can be downloaded “Form Lab” or obtained directly from the Blood Bank Department.
    – Be sure to include the hospital name and the email address for result reporting.
    * For first-time service users:
    – Contact the Blood Bank Department to request the document titled Notification of Email Address for Result Reporting.
    – Submit the completed document via mail or email to: Bloodbank.chula@chulahospital.org.
    – The Blood Bank will not provide result reports unless the completed notification is received.
    – If there is a change in the email address for reporting results, the notification process must be repeated.
    2.2 Payment
    – Make the payment at the Finance Department, located on the M floor of the Bhumisiri Building.
    2.3 Submission of Samples
    – Submit the sample along with the completed test request form to the Blood Bank Department.
  3. Result Reporting
    – Only authorized medical technologists or staff are permitted to issue test results.
